Chivalry was a code of conduct knights had to live by. One aspect of chivalry was courtly love, which was a way aristocrats could express forbidden love for people they weren't married to, and inspire the object of their affection to achieve great feats in life, often in tribute to their secret love, knowing of a love that was out of their reach, yet still requited. Today, people refer to a decent moral compass and polite behavior as "chivalry".
