dg commented on Jan 17 13 at 1:40 pm FLAG FOR ABUSEIt happens all the time. How does it happen? The same way anyone falls in love- something is missing in two peoples' lives, they find in it in eachother. It's just the degree of lying that varies, and Internet makes it very easy to lie to someone, and to oneself.
NDS commented on Jan 17 13 at 1:47 pm FLAG FOR ABUSEI get the lying part. And I don't know all the details of his story, but I know there is question as to whether he actually met this girl in person. I guess I would never consider I girl whom I have never met my gf. The Internet definitely makes deceiving someone a lot easier.
ffs commented on Jan 17 13 at 2:24 pm FLAG FOR ABUSELots of people fall in love and have full edges relationships with people they meet online. I personally think this is a product of the younger generation (and I'm only 25) who are less wary of these things and who are more willing to accept online chatting etc as a valid form of communication and feel less necessity for face to face, human contact - they even find face to face talk to be high pressure. I think in this particular story he lied about meeting the girl to save face after to peers and family members.
ha commented on Jan 17 13 at 2:41 pm FLAG FOR ABUSEEven if you have met someone and then all of your interaction is via the Internet, due to geographic hurdles, you should hesitate to call someone your bf or gf. If they hooked you like that, chances are they have others hooked in the same way.
ffs commented on Jan 17 13 at 3:08 pm FLAG FOR ABUSEWhat is logical to you doesn't matter to tons of people. This happens often. Even without the geographic hurdles its common. My 17 year old cousin has had three "relationships" in which she's "loved" each guy, but they only ever talked/skyped/texted. They didn't even attend the same school. All you have to do is take that craziness and amplify it a bit and you've hot these odd "catfish" situations. It doesn't have to make perfect sense to YOU but tons of idiots do it. It doesn't make sense to me either but I lost faith in humanity and the commonality of common sense long ago.
@op commented on Jan 17 13 at 3:27 pm FLAG FOR ABUSEYou obviously haven't been a long time reader here! Confessions has had it's own huge catfish drama over the years, I assumed it was the same guy telling lonely women what they wanted to hear. I get how the victims can fall for somebody they never met, I understand the loneliness and need to believe, even in the face of red flags. I don't understand the people who are lying, what do they get? Is it purely sexual, trying to get pics and such? Or is it a self esteem boost? Or is the deception itself the thrill? I'd love to hear from someone who has actually been in the situation as the duped or has been the catfish.
Op commented on Jan 17 13 at 4:41 pm FLAG FOR ABUSE@@op, I am fairly new here, so I don't know what you are talking about. Do you just mean confessions about catfishing, or that it has happened between the people here in the forum? I'm confused. I'd also like to hear some first hand accounts if anybody has lived this. @ffs, I agree with what you said about younger people confusing chatting/texting with real intimacy. I guess I'm having the same confusion some of the others has stated, how can you consider somebody you have never met the love of your life? I also think he lied about meeting her to avoid embarrassment, I do think he was the victim. Manti is handsome and an athlete, it seems like he should have no trouble finding a real woman, which confuses me even more.
KE commented on Jan 17 13 at 5:24 pm FLAG FOR ABUSEI have a friend who's currently in an online relationship with some random old dude, who seems to have a habit of doing this. Hey, if it makes her happy then whatever but none of us take it seriously.
@op commented on Jan 17 13 at 9:00 pm FLAG FOR ABUSEI meant the latter.
ch commented on Jan 18 13 at 8:38 am FLAG FOR ABUSEAll the more bizarre, now that the hoax turns out to be done by his male friend! How does that happen?!
