You mean something similar to "Like Water For Chocolate" where rigid patriarchy and tradition make everybody miserable? I guess I find those books and films slightly less tragic than the Wong Kar-wai romances where nobody ever gets together because of honor and principle (or insanity). I'll admit that I liked that stuff more when I was younger and thought romance involved being sort of a glutton for punishment.
