January 14, 11:16AM I hate when people say to me "Maybe you should try being single for a while" Ummm...Hello?!? I've been single for four years now, dating...I want a boyfriend, not some dude who just wants to fuck me, and not someone who takes me out 3 times, fucks me twice and then never calls again, until he's horny...so fuck you, I HAVE been single, I want to be in a relationship, a real one! with real happiness, joy and problems... I think you're missing the point, or perhaps the phrase is being taken too literally. "Being single for a while" is also known as NOT dating. The point is to get to know yourself without the noise and influence of so many other people, allowing you to discover your own natural patterns, likes, dislikes, needs, et cetera. Take 12-18 months and do not look for a date/relationship. Go to restaurants solo. Travel solo. Be selfish. Learn about you.

yeah...um, that's called life, Of course I do things by myself and know what I like and don't like! I date when I get asked out, which isn't often and it usually only lasts about 3 weeks. I go out by myself all the time, I don't have a problem with flying solo at all, but I want to get to know someone, and I want that person to want to get to know me...I know about me, i want to know about "you"

Not fucking for a year does in no way prevent you from having crushes, being pursued and.or misled. A girl who's "not dating" is perceived as a challenge. The actual sex act itself is pretty inconsequential. So the only difference in not hanging out and having one off's with guys is you end up pent up, regretting what-if's, and generally getting weirder about relationships under the pretense of "working on yourself." It makes you feel self righteous and not needy, that's good, but you're still distracted, it doesn't change anything once you're back in the game. Trust me, I did it. -(not op)

It's kind of condescending to assume the op needs to "get to know herself". Basically, the only people that need to stop dating for a period of time are people that literally don't know how to be alone and feel the need to constantly be hooking up with someone or getting attention from the opposite sex. For everyone else, avoiding dating for long periods of time only it makes it more awkward when you start again.
